Heeey guys! I know I’m a day late with this here newsletter but I didn’t really feel like writing it yesterday—so I’m writing it now! :)
Politics
Remember Trump’s comments about women being duct-taped and forcibly driven into the U.S. from the southern border, and no one knows where he got that mental image from? Turns out, he could have gotten it from this movie. (We’ll see if “duct-taped women” make a return during his speech tonight.)
Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks, is very publicly considering a 2020 run. The co-founder of La Colombe (a far superior coffee chain in quality and style, IMO) is sh*tting on him for it.
DID YOU KNOW? Journalists and every other citizen in the U.S. has to pay a government database called PACER in order to access federal court documents online (which are considered public record). They reportedly made “$146 million in fees” in 2016, and it only costs them “$3 million to operate.” (OUTRAGEOUS)
ICYMI: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a politician who considers skincare as a hobby of hers. Whatever you think of her and her policy ideas, you can’t deny that she *knows* her skincare stuff.
National
An amazing profile on Nikolas Cruz’s brother, and the effects he’s felt since his brother admitted to killing 17 people at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year.
Tech giants like FB and Google aren’t exactly getting the best press lately. This one guy tried to cut Google out of his life (as an experiment and in the effort to distance himself from Big Data) and it said it was a huge pain in the ass.
Hear this piece out: The Real Housewives of Atlanta is just another example / an allegory of how the American Dream has gone awry.
International
The mayor of Gdańsk, Poland was recently murdered. While the killing lacked a clear political motive, it’s caused Polish media to turn inward to examine the “deep political and media polarization” and “aggressive, sensationalist rhetoric” within the country.
Culture
If your lawyer previously committed murder, would you hire him? This is a really interesting piece on how our society and criminal justice system today struggles with forgiveness and redemption for violent criminals.
This one woman embarked on a really radical journey: Getting rejected every single day for a month (AKA Rejection Therapy). Here’s what she learned.
The weed scene is not going away soon. This profile of a chick (who actually went to my high school and college haha) sheds interesting light about the marijuana industry’s creative forces, and how women are fighting for a space within weed culture to make a splash (and get paid for it).
Fashun Biz/Legal Read: When you buy designer clothes second-hand, how can you be so sure it’s the real deal? Chanel is suing designer second-hand start-up, The RealReal, after it allegedly sold about six counterfeit Chanel bags to customers (whoops).
That’s all for now!
See u next week!
